It is with great sadness that the Academy of Australian and New Zealand Prosthodontists (AANZP) marks the passing of Dr John Charles Gibb Locke on 3 October 2026, surrounded by his family. John was a founding member, Past President (2006–2008) and the Academy’s inaugural Life Member.
John held a special place in the history of the Academy. His vision, enthusiasm and dedication were instrumental in the Academy’s establishment and early development. Over the years, he generously gave his time and expertise, establishing and serving on numerous Academy committees and helping to shape the organisation into the professional community we know today.
John’s influence extended well beyond the Academy. A specialist prosthodontist in Melbourne for many decades, he was a former Federal President of the Australian Prosthodontic Society and spent many years teaching postgraduate prosthodontic students at the University of Melbourne. His commitment to education, mentorship and service reflected his passion for the specialty and the profession.
The Dr John Locke Oration, held during the Academy’s Biennial Scientific Meetings and named in his honour, remains a fitting tribute to his achievements and the high regard in which he was held by his peers.
We remember John with warmth and gratitude for the collegiality, friendship and shared purpose he helped foster within the Academy.
On behalf of the President, Council and members of the AANZP, we extend our heartfelt condolences to John’s family and loved ones.
John will be fondly remembered and greatly missed, and his legacy will endure through the Academy he helped establish.
